The repair range and the bottom of the replacement range touch. A plumber's hour plus a service call to re-seat a flange or swap a gasket lands in the repair band; the same hour, plus a mid-range half-horsepower unit, lands near the bottom of the replacement band. That is the whole repair-or-replace decision on a disposal: if the unit is past about eight years, or the failure is anything internal (seal, bearings, lug, motor), replacement is the same money or less than a repair that will not hold. Under that age with an external problem — flange, gasket, jam — repair.
Replacement cost moves with three things. Horsepower: a one-third-HP builder unit is the floor, three-quarter-HP is the common upgrade for a household that actually uses it, one-HP is for people who put bones in it. Mounting: a like-for-like swap onto the same brand's mounting ring is quick; a different brand means a new sink flange and a fresh seal. Electrical: a unit that was hardwired and is being replaced with a plug-in needs an outlet under the sink, and if there is no switched circuit there, that becomes an electrician's job and a different conversation.
When the disposal is not the problem
A kitchen sink that fills on both sides, drains slowly, and gurgles gets blamed on the disposal because the disposal is the thing you can see. Run the test: switch the disposal on with the water running. If it spins freely and water still rises, the unit is doing its job and the clog is in the P-trap or the branch line behind the wall — usually grease that has set where the warm kitchen water cools. That is a drain-cleaning call at $99–$250, and cabling the line will do more than any disposal work. If the bathroom sink or tub is also slow, it was never the kitchen at all — read slow drains in the whole house before calling anyone.
Who can legally do this work in California
A disposal swap is one of the rare plumbing jobs where the answer is "almost anyone." Since January 1, 2025, California allows unlicensed work only when the whole job (labor and materials) is $1,000 or less, no building permit is required, and the person doing it employs nobody else on the job. If any one of those fails, a licensed contractor is required regardless of price. A like-for-like replacement with no new wiring and no permit sits comfortably under $1,000 and fits all three conditions, so a handyman doing it is within the law. The moment the job grows — a new circuit, a new outlet where none existed, a permit — it is licensed work: a C-36 plumber for the plumbing side, a C-10 electrician if the electrical side is more than plugging in. Making the next one last
- Cold water, always, and keep it running ten seconds after the grinding stops. Hot water liquefies fat that then sets further down the line.
- Feed it, do not fill it. Small amounts with the water running; a chamber packed solid is how lugs break.
- Ice and citrus peel once a month scour the chamber and the underside of the splash guard, which is where the smell lives.
- Grease in the trash, never the sink — the disposal survives it; the branch line does not, and that line is the expensive part of the whole system.
- Run it regularly. A disposal that sits for weeks seizes; thirty seconds of use a few times a week keeps the bearings free.
